LINDA Hulbert
Linda Hulbert has dedicated her life to Alaska and its people through private-sector work, public service, education advocacy, and philanthropy. Born in 1944 near New York City, she graduated from Springfield College in western Massachusetts in 1965 with a degree in physical education. There she met John Hulbert, who became the love of her life. After traveling and working in western Europe, the couple moved to Alaska in 1968, driving the Alaska Highway in a white and green Volkswagen van with all their possessions.
Their early years in Alaska began modestly. They lived in a trailer near the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) while John taught writing and she began working with non-profit organizations. She developed a lifelong passion for strengthening Alaska’s communities and institutions. They also formed a close relationship with noted Alaskan poet John Haines. Early in her Alaska experience, she declared that Alaska would be her permanent home, a commitment she has maintained.
Linda and John raised their children, Jaina and Erik, in Fairbanks. Following John’s death in 1983, she became a single parent, and sole breadwinner. Years later, she joined New York Life Insurance Company where she recently (2026) celebrated 35 years as an agent, specializing in financial services, estate planning, and charitable giving.
Education became one of Hulbert’s central causes. She advocated tirelessly for adult basic education and academic and technical educational opportunities and served on numerous state boards and commissions appointed by Alaska governors. Through personal philanthropy, client introductions, and work with the New York Life Foundation, her efforts resulted in substantial charitable support in Alaska, particularly educational opportunities for rural students.
