LINDA Hulbert

CLASS OF 2026

Linda Hulbert has dedicated her life to Alaska and its people through private-sector work, public service, education advocacy, and philanthropy. Born in 1944 near New York City, she graduated from Springfield College in western Massachusetts in 1965 with a degree in physical education. There she met John Hulbert, who became the love of her life. After traveling and working in western Europe, the couple moved to Alaska in 1968, driving the Alaska Highway in a white and green Volkswagen van with all their possessions.
Their early years in Alaska began modestly. They lived in a trailer near the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) while John taught writing and she began working with non-profit organizations. She developed a lifelong passion for strengthening Alaska’s communities and institutions. They also formed a close relationship with noted Alaskan poet John Haines. Early in her Alaska experience, she declared that Alaska would be her permanent home, a commitment she has maintained.
Linda and John raised their children, Jaina and Erik, in Fairbanks. Following John’s death in 1983, she became a single parent, and sole breadwinner. Years later, she joined New York Life Insurance Company where she recently (2026) celebrated 35 years as an agent, specializing in financial services, estate planning, and charitable giving.
Education became one of Hulbert’s central causes. She advocated tirelessly for adult basic education and academic and technical educational opportunities and served on numerous state boards and commissions appointed by Alaska governors. Through personal philanthropy, client introductions, and work with the New York Life Foundation, her efforts resulted in substantial charitable support in Alaska, particularly educational opportunities for rural students.

Extended Bio

Linda Hulbert has committed her life to Alaska, its people and its institutions through private sector work, public service and philanthropy.
Hulbert was born in 1944 in New York on the outskirts of New York City. After her father’s WWII military service, her father attended college and later became a vice president of JP Morgan Bank in Manhattan.
In 1965, she graduated from Springfield College in western Massachusetts with a degree in physical education. It was there that she met the love of her life, John Hulbert. Upon graduating, they travelled and worked in different parts of western Europe, including Edinburgh and London. In 1968, they moved to Alaska.
To get to Alaska, they drove a white and green Volkswagen van up the Alaska Highway with all their possessions. Upon arriving, they lived in a trailer near the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) while John taught writing and Hulbert began her work with non-profit organizations.  This would become a passion she would devote herself to for decades to come.
They formed a close relationship with the famous Alaskan poet John Haines, who lived on a homestead along the Richardson Highway. Early in their Alaskan adventure, Hulbert told John that Alaska would be her home and she has fulfilled that goal to this day. Sadly, John passed away in 1983.
Their children, Jaina and Erik, were raised in Fairbanks and live there to this day.  Hulbert forged life as a single parent, building a life for her children and eventual grandchildren, of which she has four.  After Hulbert, both of her sisters, their families, and her mother later moved to Alaska.
Hulbert’s passion became helping to build a system of basic adult education in Alaska. She became a tireless advocate for educational programs, both academic and technical. She was appointed to numerous state boards and commissions by a variety of Alaskan governors over many years.
After John’s death, Hulbert took on the role as a sole breadwinner with 2 young children. Building on her upbringing in the banking world, she built a successful insurance and financial services firm as an agent of New York Life Insurance Company. She recently celebrated her 35th anniversary as a successful New York Life agent, specializing in financial services, estate planning and charitable giving.
Through her personal giving, client recommendations and advocacy with the New York Life Foundation, significant charitable contributions came to Alaskan programs of all kinds. Many of the largest donations focused on educational opportunities for rural Alaskan students. The scholarship that she personally endowed at UAF assists students studying vocational education.
She was awarded a Meritorious Service Award for her contributions by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and spent many years as part of the University of Alaska Foundation.
Linda Hulbert’s efforts to improve quality of life for all Alaskans have been both considerable and effective. She prefers results rather than claiming credit. She was a widow with 2 young children in a house without running water or central heat, who then built a thriving financial firm to provide for her family and networks of charitable donors for Alaskan causes of all kinds.
